A practice exam essay for you on your case study of BROADCAST FICTION. This will be handed out during Friday's lesson but is here just in case.
What is the relationship between the media products in your case study and the advertising industry?
In your answer you should:
- Provide a brief outline of your case study
- Show how media products from your case study have been influenced by advertising
- Support your answer with reference to examples from three media platforms
You need to think about product placement, sponsorship and also the MARKETING of the actual product itself (and any MERCHANDISING). Even with a BBC series there is something to say about how the actual product markets itself and its subsidiaries.
Heroes has had product placement for Sprint, Apple, Dell and other Brands, especially Nissan. Because the show was made for NBC and not the BBC this is obviously acceptable. Programmes made for the BBC have to be very careful about product placement, and technically should avoid it! this is because they are made using money from the licence fee, and the BBC is not allowed to accept money from commercial advertising.
You will probably need to do some research around the Broadcast Fiction texts you plan on using as examples. Remember, you need at least 3 texts to refer to in detail, along with presence of those texts on the 2 other platforms.
Don't forget to do your final drafts of coursework as well!!
Good Luck & Happy Easter

Work for the Half-term holiday
This is a practice exam question so I would like you please to do it on paper to hand in after half-term. You MUST refer to at least 3 different broadcast fiction texts (and their subsidiary texts - websites, magazines, blogs etc.) as supportive evidence. When it says "case study" it means the case study of Broadcast Fiction. Media products are media texts. The platforms are the three defined platforms of e-media, paper texts & audio/visual.
Question:
Explore the ways that audiences consume and respond to media products across different media platforms.
Support your answer with reference to examples from your case study.
Good luck and WORK HARD! Don't forget for those of you still preparing your presentation you still need to do it after half-term. Make sure you analyse the text according to the Key Concepts and that your handout reflects this.

Work for Friday 23rd January
Hi chaps,
I'm afraid I've caught my daughter's flu hence I won't be in today.
You have a lot of work to do anyway, both with preparing your Case Study presentation, and with your Coursework. If you are up-to-date with both of these can I suggest that you attempt to do an analysis of a website linked to your Case Study. If there isn't a specific one, then do an analysis of a website linked to Heroes. Look at the appeal to the audience, who the target audience is & how we know, the representations present, the underlying values and ideology, and the Institution etc. Also think about the reasons it was produced and what it aims to do.
Good luck!

Work for Friday 16th January
Hi guys,
sorry I can't be with you today. However there is plenty of work you can do without me.
Task One:
Look on the shared area folder (Media Studies - AS Lecture notes). You will find a document called mise-en-scene. Print this out, read it through and work through tasks - it may be better to do this with a partner.
Task Two:
Finish watching Episode 2 of Series 2, Larkrise to Candleford - available on BBC Larkrise website. Think particularly about Representation and Values and Ideology. Also, think about how the director has used the mise-en-scene to both create the narrative, add meaning to it, and move it forward.
Task Three:
Finally, in that folder you will also find a document called open and closed narrative. This is just to remind you of the key differences between the two types of narrative which will be useful for your presentation on your chosen Broadcast Fiction text. Can I remind you that for your presentations you will also need to explore how the text is presented across the other two media platforms - e-media and er . . paper media. How do these add to the audience's enjoyment of the text? What is the purpose of these other related texts?
Good Luck and DON'T FORGET TO DO THE WORK!
